    It's a quick game to play with a small board and just four pieces a side. You immediately get into action with your opponent. I played the mobile app version and found it addictive to play. I know the conventional shogi game so I easily understood the rules. The game reminds me of sumo, which is quick but action-packed. They also have the goro goro doubotsu shogi, which introduces dogs and cats, that move as gold and silver generals respectively. In goro goro doubotsu shogi, they don't have elephants and giraffes.

    Wow! I used to play this when I was a school kid! I'm now over 70 y/o. There is another game that was very popular with us kids at the time and that's Dou Shou Qi / 鬥獸棋. I remember one time when the pieces were made of candies and you eat your opponent's piece when captured. Great fun!

I have a video just about that game here: ua-cam.com/video/3Uh2jrucELE/v-deo.html I never did see the game made of candy, but if I did I surely would not have it anymore -- I would have eaten it long ago... Yeah, I think that's the main reason our modern chess replaced this older version so successfully. • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess 5 місяців тому

      Of course, we expect 100% respectful honesty from our commentators. Colonel Hai, who created this game, intended to simulate the realities of 20th century warfare the best he could in a chess format. I think it's bound to be peculiar then, both as a chess game and as a military strategy review. And of course, he has infused it with his own preferences. To me what stands out is how complex it is, compared to a typical game based on chess. What do you find especially weird? I know you're being honest with us...

    This does seem like a very peculiar game. Seems like there’d be a lot of draws though with the forfeiting ability and the inability to checkmate with the general and the fact that the cannon becomes literally immobile once enough pieces come off the board.

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess 5 місяців тому

      yes, I do think the game has to be approached differently from other chess games. I believe that a skillful player avoids exchanging the pieces down and tries one way after another to create a checkmating possibility. Sometimes the game lasts a long time, transforming through many different attempts. I have noticed, for instance, that the cannons are sometimes kept in the back ranks, behind a line of pieces. From there, they can strike out and also return throughout the game. Another thing: in tournaments, there is often a piece-count method used to declare a winner, so the tournament can proceed even if few checkmates occur.
